Sofia Olsson - Member Spotlight

Sofia Olsson here, living in Sweden. Born in 1984 and in my prime - which I am every year!
Live on a small farm with my partner and our dogs. We also have a horse that we keep at a racetrack near where we live.

Tell us a bit about you?

I work as a photographer, but not exactly photographing pets. I photograph clothes for a outdoor company in Sweden. In my spare time, I train and compete with my dogs and horse. The dogs train in several dog sports while the horse competes in trotting. In the midst of all that, I also photograph.

What camera and lenses do you most often use?

There have been dogs since I was born and I have always been interested in them. Photography started when I was around 10 years old. I got a small children's camera from my dad. Even then I wanted to take cool action photos of the dogs, but it took a few years before a more advanced camera was needed for those types of photos.

What’s one thing in your camera bag you can’t live without?

The bottle of water that I never drink - but it always has to be there.

What’s the best thing about being a pet photographer?

For me, the best thing is to capture the moment, especially when the pet is moving. I love action and I love dramatic lighting - when I can get it.

How would you describe your style?

I would say that my style is bright colors on the darker side.

What is your proudest achievement as a pet photographer?

What I am most proud of is probably my project Kelpiegallery. I have been photographing this breed of dog with the same approach since 2005 and have now photographed over 1500 dogs from different parts of the world. These are not super fancy pictures, but they are projects that have created many contacts and friendships for me. I have inspired many people to see the Australian Kelpie from show judges, future puppy buyers and breeders looking for males for their females.

What are your photography goals for the future?

I want to continue what I'm already doing, but sharpen the images to be more magical. It would have been nice to win a photo contest too.

What do you do to cultivate and nurture your creativity?

I am inspired by many photographers on social media, especially Instagram. It's not just those who photograph animals like dogs and horses. I am also inspired by nature photographers.

I am also inspired by my job, which forces me out of my own comfort zone where I get to photograph activities I might never have done otherwise, such as skiing or golf.

What specific skills have improved since being an Unleashed Education member?

I don't know yet, that's exactly what's going to be so exciting!

What's your favourite thing about being an Unleashed Education member?

The community and the incredible feedback.

Have you ever had something funny happen during a shoot?

I make a lot of bloopers, but in photography I haven't messed up yet. I can tell you that I fell off a ladder while painting and got paint on half my face. It would have been fun to have a picture of it. :)
