Emerge 2026 Highs and Lows Top 10
Jun 18, 2026
For challenge number three of Emerge, we asked our challengers to create images using high key or low key techniques.
The use of high key and low key imagery is very common in the world of art and photography. Their popularity can probably be attributed to them being a relatively easy way to create a mood and elicit an emotional response from the viewer.
High key imagery tends to bring with it more positive emotions. Its bright, airy, clean look is a perfect way to convey joy and happiness.
On the other hand, low key images tend to have a more serious or dramatic mood and can even go as far as feeling dark and ominous.
Once more, we were not disappointed with the results, and the submission standard was extremely high.
Here as always, in no particular order, are our top 10 images for this challenge. Very well done to the photographers who created these fantastic images.

We provide video feedback on all images submitted for the challenge, and from there, we select our Top 20 and Top 10. Without further ado, here are the Top 10 images for this challenge!

Light and airy with a touch of humour in the unusual upright walk of this dog. This is a wonderful high key image!

A striking pose and a fantastic use of the location and its diagonal lines to make this feel really dynamic and immersive.

Cherie Weir | CWC Photography
This image has a dark and intense feeling, the dog's focused gaze works brilliantly in the context of the location too.

This low key image has a beautiful warm and cosy feeling. The home environment and the pose of the subject work well.

Diane Schlichting | Kindred Souls Pet Photography
Great pose and expression on this little guy. The high key style combined with the background, posing prop and curly coat give a textural and whimsical feeling.

Erica Harvey | Erica Lane Photography
What a great spot for some high key image creation! The framing elements, space and depth combine to make a fantastic composition. The dog is posed perfectly.

Jill Blathwayt
The rim light give this low key image some drama, it spills just enough over onto the face to give the viewer connection to the subject.

Kristy Wallis | Borderfame photography
This low key shot has a sense of danger about it, the dog looks engaged, yet is creeping through the dark woods.

Linda Van Oeffelen-Brosens | Jinterwas photography
This is a beautifully captured high key image, the puzzle hears and the longing look up tugs at the heartstrings and makes the viewer want to reach in and give the dog a pat!

Yvonne Van Lieshout | de Brons fotografie
The contrasty light gives this image a bit of drama, the texture and expression of the dog are fantastic.
