Arrowtown in Autumn

The workshop will be held during autumn in Arrowtown, New Zealand. Stay a little longer after the workshop and check out the Arrowtown Autumn Festival!

Workshop Details

Unleashed Workshop is an immersive workshop retreat focused on the art and craft of dog photography.

What to Expect

You'll be participating in one of two workshops, each of them running over three full days. The first workshop will run from 12-14 April and the second workshop will run from 17-19 April, 2023.

Both workshops are suitable for amateur to professional photographers, as long as the minimum requirements (outlined below) are met.

Limited to just eight attendees each and with two instructors, there's a great instructor to student ratio which means plenty of opportunity for one-on-one time in the classroom and on shoots.

We have plenty of knowledge to impart on all things dog photography shooting and editing - but most importantly, we'll be discovering precisely what you need to learn or improve, and helping you specifically fill in those gaps in your knowledge and skills.

We have a beautiful little conference room in Arrowtown organised for our classroom time and the workshops will take place at the peak of the autumn season, with the Arrowtown Autumn Festival happening directly after the second workshop from 20-25 April.

You can expect some pretty epic autumn shooting locations at this workshop with plenty of colour!

So you can book accommodation to suit your budget, this experience doesn't include accommodation. There are plenty of options in the local area ranging from budget backpackers to high end luxury.

You'll need your own transport to and from the conference venue each day, but we'll drive you to and from the shooting locations and provide lunch and snacks during the day.

On the final evening, after our last shoot, we'll be heading to a local restaurant for a celebratory final dinner! Your meal is complimentary, but your drinks are on you.

And the experience doesn't end when you leave the workshop!

Around four weeks after the workshop, we'll be asking you submit a set of final edited images that you took during the workshop for a post-workshop portfolio review. We'll all connect on Zoom (like a reunion!) so we can give you some super-valuable feedback on your work and review the images taken during the last shoot on the final day.

Minimum Requirements - Skills and Gear

We welcome applications from amateur level to professional. A good understanding of exposure is required - the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO. A solid knowledge of how to use your camera also essential - changing exposure settings, focusing, changing focus settings and metering.

We ask that you own or have access to a digital SLR or mirrorless camera, with lenses ranging from wide angle to telephoto. You'll also need a laptop computer with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop installed.

Applications

Frequently Asked Questions

We have a gorgeous little conference venue booked at Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown on the South Island of New Zealand. We'll be hanging out there  for the classroom components of the workshop, then each day we'll head out to shoot at some beautiful local spots that we can't wait to share with you!

The only transport we provide is to and from shooting locations each day. You'll need to find your own way to Millbrook Resort each morning, and home from Millbrook Resort each evening after we return from our shoot.

We provide a coffee and tea station, morning and/or afternoon tea and a hearty cafe lunch each day. You'll need to organise your own breakfast and dinner, except for the final day where we're treating you to a restaurant meal on us, to celebrate completing the workshop!

Unleashed Workshop has been primarily created to help pet photographers with the art of pet photography, so there will be no business (sales, pricing, marketing) related topics taught during the workshop. We will be focusing on shooting and editing only.

This makes it suitable for a wide range of pet photographers, whether you run a business or never intend to!

Autumn in Arrowtown can get a little chilly. The temperature ranges from 5°C (41°F) - 12°C (53°F) during mid April. April is historically one of the drier months of the year, however there is still a chance of some rainfall. Sunrise will be around 7:20am and sunset is around 6:10pm.

We have no control over what the weather decides to do, so we’ll still shoot if it’s cloudy or raining lightly. If it is raining heavily we will attempt to re-shuffle the shoot times. Definitely bring warm, waterproof gear to wear and a rain cover for your camera. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds based on weather, but we promise to make the best of any weather situation.

Yes! This workshop was designed to let you choose and book your own accommodation nearby - whether you'd prefer to save on costs at a budget backpackers, or take advantage of some of the amazing luxury accommodation Arrowtown and the surrounds have to offer. Just make sure it's within easy driving distance to Millbrook Resort (map link) in Arrowtown so you can make your way with your own transport to our conference venue each day.

Since you are organising your own accommodation, you're more than welcome to bring your spouse along to stay with you - however they'll need to occupy themselves elsewhere while you're participating in all workshop activities, including classroom time, shoots and meals.

They are more than welcome to attend our final dinner, however they will need to pay for their own meal and drinks.

Luckily there's plenty to keep them busy by themselves during the day in this popular holiday destination!

Arrowtown's closest international airport is Queenstown (ZQN), an easy (and picturesque) 15 minute's drive away.

You'll need to organise your own transport from the airport to your accommodation. We recommend hiring a car for the duration of your visit, or carpooling with other attendees.

Yes, this very first Unleashed Workshop will be followed by more in the coming years - exciting! We have some awesome destinations in mind.

We highly recommend the Barka out-of-this-world pet photography retreat series if you are keen to improve your shooting and editing, along with all aspects of running a successful pet photography business. Charlotte teaches these with Nicole Begley and Kaylee Greer and you can find out when the next one is on here.

There is a $100 application fee which be applied to the total workshop fee of $2,900 if your application is approved, or refunded in full if your application is unsuccessful.

If your application is approved but you decide not to attend, your application fee will be not be refunded, so please only apply if you are serious about joining us!

If the workshop is cancelled due to travel restrictions, border closures, lockdowns or any other pandemic-related issues, you have two options. All fees you have paid can be transferred to a future Unleashed Workshop, or we will refund you in full, minus the $100 application fee.

If the workshop goes ahead but you are unable to make it to the workshop due to travel restrictions, border closures, lockdowns or any other pandemic-related issues, you have two options. All fees you have paid can be transferred to a future Unleashed Workshop, or we will refund you in full, minus the $100 application fee.

Please make sure your accommodation and travel is refundable or transferrable, as we cannot offer any refunds or financial assistance with money lost due to cancelled travel and accommodation bookings.

If you are unable to attend the workshop due to personal reasons and the workshop is still going ahead, we offer a full refund, minus the $100 application fee, providing we can fill your place. If we are unable to fill your place, unfortunately we cannot offer any refund.
